The employee believed that “if he yielded to coercion and consented to the hospital mandatory policy, he would violate his conscience as to what is right and what is wrong.” The employee asserted in writing that he believed the vaccine would do his body more harm than good. ![]() Court of Appeals ruled that a hospital worker’s objection to a flu vaccine mandate was medical, not religious, in nature. ![]() The appellate court held that an employee’s veganism was insufficiently comprehensive to be characterized as anything more than a personal philosophy. First, a religion “addresses fundamental and ultimate questions” addressing “deep and imponderable matters.” Second, a religion is a comprehensive belief system rather than “an isolated teaching.” Third, a religion often has such “formal and external signs” as services or holidays. In a 2002 ruling, the California Court of Appeal identified three attributes religions tend to have. The EEOC reaffirms that “objections to COVID-19 vaccination that are based on social, political, or personal preferences, or on nonreligious concerns about the possible effects of the vaccine do not qualify as ‘religious beliefs’ under Title VII.” Court rulings provide guidance in distinguishing between religious and secular beliefs. An employee who fails to respond risks losing a later claim that the employer improperly denied an accommodation. An employer may ask the employee to explain how their religious beliefs conflict with the vaccine mandate. The EEOC says an employer generally “should assume that a request for religious accommodation is based on a sincerely held religious belief,” but need not accept such an assertion at face value. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() An overwrought, chest-thumping score is surplus to requirements in a film that already feels as though everything, from the characters to the walls of the cells, is sodden with panic sweats. Serial killer Carlton Gary escaped from a low-security prison by sawing through the bars of his cell. A pacy screenplay, co-written by director Francis Annan and adapted from a book by Jenkin, rarely flags, but it’s the nervy camera, hugging the characters at hip height, the better to scrutinise each locked barrier to freedom, that most successfully builds the tension. Later on 15 March 1983, Gary escaped again from police custody. The brainchild of writer-director Masanori Hata, The Adventures of Milo and Otis debuted in Japan as Koneko Monogatari ( A Kitten’s Story) during the summer of 1986. Featuring limited narration interspersed with occasional poetry and a beautiful soundtrack by Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, the film took four years and more than 40 hours of footage to craft in its original form. Also called The Adventures of Chatran, the film centered on a tabby kitten, Chatran (pronounced “Sha-toh-ran”), and his puppy pal, a Pug named Pusuke (pronounced “Poos-kay”). Rescripted by Mark Saltzman, heavily edited, given a new soundtrack, and with redubbed narration by English actor Dudley Moore, the film was released in America as The Adventures of Milo and Otis in August of 1989. Where the original version was largely quiet, meditative, and yet unflinching in terms of the struggles and challenges the young cat and Pug puppy faced in the wild, the English-language version is boisterous, joyful, and chatty. In the words of Dan Crow’s folksy, cheery theme song, “We’re gonna take a walk outside today,” or at least down memory lane, and “see what we can find” in the incredible world of Milo and Otis. The Adventures of Milo and Otis starts out as a frenetic, rambunctious movie about innocence, exploration, and friendship. ![]() We are thrust into the story with the birth of Milo, a tiny orange kitten living on a busy but well-ordered farm. Taking his first tentative, if already mischievous, steps outside of the barn loft where he was whelped, Milo meets Otis, a baby Pug. Once Milo is provisionally satisfied that Otis is not, in fact, a cat, the two agrarian urchins become fast friends. Immediately inseparable, Milo and Otis wrestle, tend a chicken egg, and learn to navigate the boundaries of their bucolic world. Just when the pair are most comfortable and content, a game of hide and seek goes awry and Milo drifts downriver in a box. Expressing instincts of pure love and selfless affection, Otis sets off in search of his best friend. After providing a midstream defense of Milo from a bear, Otis does not see his friend again for half the film’s running time. Their reunion is short-lived, however, as not even four minutes later, Milo meets Joyce, a lady cat, and falls in love. As fall turns to winter, and Otis feels increasingly alone, we’re reminded, not only of the rapid maturation of cats and dogs, but also of the all-too familiar and mutable nature of friendship itself. Milo and Otis’ adventures seem to take place over the course of a single year, spanning a remarkable variety of landscapes and environments. This is nothing less than an enchanted fantasy world, like J.R.R. It is the world of quest romance following the river away from the safety of the farm, Milo and Otis’s voyages take them through forest and fen, to the desert and the ocean, within sight of the mountain foothills and into the broad plains. Together and by themselves, Milo and Otis encounter beasts large and small, familiar and outlandish. ![]() ![]() The new Model 740’s introduction, originally scheduled for the The Model 742 engineering studies designation wasĬhanged to the Model 740 Woodmaster on May 22, 1950. Not even a visionary prophet like Morpheus could have predicted what would happen 17 years later: In 2016, the metaphor of the red pill was adopted by the alt-right supporters of future President Donald Trump to galvanize the defiant spirit of the campaign. But no concept has carried more linguistic weight than the red and blue pills, which can either solidify your radical new awareness or send you back into ignorant narcotic bliss. Even the idea of “unplugging” from one’s devices has its literal precedent in the vivid image of Neo unhooking his connection to the Matrix from the port in the back of his neck. Bullet-time-the slow-motion effect used in the movie to depict bullets rippling through the air-itself became a metaphor for viewers dislodging themselves from space and time to see the world from a new dimension. A glitch in the Matrix, too, has come to mean something inexplicable and surreal happening in an otherwise normal situation. The Matrix became shorthand for the uncanny feeling that our media-saturated, hyper-commercialized, machine-mediated culture had alienated us from some primal human reality. The film also introduced a vocabulary to describe many of its associated sensations. Since its release in 1999, The Matrix has endured as a potent representation of the technologically motivated identity crisis of the early 21st century. ![]() You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” “You take the blue pill,” he says, “the story ends-you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. The weighted average is determined by multiplying the percent of natural abundance by the actual mass of the isotope. The atomic mass of an element is the weighted average of the atomic masses of the naturally occurring isotopes of that element. Why? The reason is that we need to take into account the natural abundance percentages of each isotope in order to calculate what is called the weighted average. And we are done.= 35.968 \,u \nonumber \]Īs you can see, the average atomic mass given in the last column of the table above (35.453) is significantly lower. Or we could say 40% or 40.00% carbon by mass when we round to four significant figures. So this will be, I'll say, approximately equal to 0.4000. 72.06 divided by 180.156 is equal to, and if we round to four So we just have to calculate this and round to four significant figures. So this four significant figures is our significantįigures limiting factor. Than the hundredths place, but even if we rounded over there for significant figures purposes, we would still have at least four, we'd actually have five To the hundredths place, and so when we add things together, we should get no more Because even down here, if we were just doing thisīlue calculation here, that should only haveįour significant figures, it would have gotten us So we can type this into a calculator but we should remind ourselves that our final answer should have no more than four significant figures. Did I do that right? If I were just to add up everything, not even think about significant figures. Six times 16 is 96.00, and this will be equal to 72, if we're just thinkingĪbout the pure calculation, before we think about significant figures, 72.06 divided by, let's see, if I add 72 to 12, I get 84, plus 96, I get 180.156. So in the denominator, we have 72.06 plus, let's see, 12 times 1.008 is 12.096, and then we have plus Pure calculation first, and then I'm gonna worryĪbout significant figures. And then in the denominator, I'm just going to do the ![]() So let's see, in the numerator, six times 12.01 is 72.06. The units will cancel out, and we'll get a pure Grams in the numerator, grams in the denominator, Here, the units cancel out, so we're left with just Plus six moles of oxygen, times the molar mass of oxygen, which is going to be 16.00 So 12 moles of hydrogen times the molar mass of hydrogen, which is going to be 1.008 To that, we are going to add the mass of 12 moles of hydrogen. We just had up here, it's going to be six moles of carbon times the molar mass of carbon, 12.01 grams per mole of carbon. Mass of six moles of carbon, 12 moles of hydrogen,Īnd six moles of oxygen. ![]() And then in the denominator, what are we going to have? Well, the mass of one mole of glucose, for every glucose molecule, we have six carbons, 12 If the average atomic mass is 12.01 universal atomic mass units, the molar mass is going to be 12.01 grams per mole of carbon. Well, what's that going to be? Well, we can get that from the average atomic mass of carbon. Now, what is this going to be? Well, this is going to be equal to, it's going to be in our numerator, we're going to have six moles of carbon times the molar mass of carbon. Times as many carbon atoms or six moles of carbon. Glucose is because this, if we assume this is a mole of glucose, every molecule of glucose has six carbons. Why it's six moles of carbon divided by one mole of Is going to be the mass of six moles of carbon divided by the mass of one mole of glucose? And once again, the reason So one way we could think about it is, we say okay, for every mole of glucose, we have six moles of carbon. Let's just assume that this is a mole, this is a mole of glucose. But to help us think this through, we can imagine amount. Of glucose doesn't matter is because the percent carbon by mass should be the same You the average atomic masses of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Percentage of carbon by mass of my sample? Pause this video and think about it. I'm not even gonna tell you its mass, but based on the molecular formula, can you figure out the And so let's just say that I had a sample of pure glucose right over here, this is my little pile of glucose. So right over here, I have the molecular formula for glucose. ![]() ![]() Malukas U, Maskeliunas R, Damasevicius R, Wozniak M (2018) Real time path finding for assisted living using deep learning.
